REC3885317 is mapped to a different OEM group

Recmar maps REC3885317 to Volvo Penta 3860764 and MerCruiser 50-864340A2. It rates this starter at 1.7 kW, labels it Heavy Duty and places 7.4-litre V6/V8 wording on the row.

The supplier SKU can therefore mislead anyone who assumes that REC3885317 must be the direct Recmar match for OEM 3885317. Recmar's current index says otherwise.

A later replacement can cover an older number without being the same design

A specialist Mercury parts database reports that 50-864340A2 was superseded by 863007A1 as a functional replacement and warns that the replacement may look different from the original. That gives a sensible reason for newer listings to combine both number families.

ARCO Marine also sells one modern gear-reduction starter, part 30433, which it cross-references to 50-863007A1, 50-864340A2, Volvo Penta 3860764 and 3885317, among other numbers. This proves that a manufacturer can design one replacement to cover both older OEM groups.

It does not prove that Recmar has put the same unit in the REC50-863007A1 and REC3885317 boxes. Recmar continues to publish two rows with different ratings and application wording.

Engine displacement is not enough on its own. GM-based marine engines have used several starter layouts over long production periods, and previous replacements may not look like the original factory unit.
