Confirm what it fits, such as a specific sterndrive, saildrive, outboard model, shaft diameter, hull fitting, or engine anode position. Then match the anode’s shape, thickness, and hole spacing, plus the fixing style. If you have a part number from the old anode, use it to validate, especially on ring and plate styles. Photos of the mounting point and the old anode help a lot when markings are unclear.

You can, but it is best to choose material based on where the boat spends most of its time and switch the set across the same protected system together. Mixing materials on the same system can lead to uneven wear patterns. If you are unsure, match what has worked previously or share your boating environment and what the anodes fit. Fitment still comes first, because the correct material does not help if the anode does not mount properly.

Uneven wear can be caused by missing anodes, poor contact at one mounting point, differences in immersion, or electrical issues such as bonding faults or stray current. Check each anode has clean metal contact and is tight, and confirm you have all expected anodes fitted. If one anode disappears rapidly, inspect shore power, chargers, and connections for corrosion or faults. Uneven wear is often a clue that something else needs attention.
