Before ordering, compare what the kit includes to the anodes you can see on your unit, including plates, rings, and small pencil anodes where fitted. This simple comparison prevents buying a kit that leaves you short, or includes parts you cannot use.

Material choice should match your boating water

Kits are often available in different materials. Zinc is commonly chosen for salt water, aluminium is often used for salt and brackish conditions, and magnesium is usually reserved for fresh water. If you boat in mixed conditions, choose based on the majority of use. Keeping material consistent across the protected system helps avoid uneven wastage.

Installation tips that keep anodes working properly

Anodes need clean contact. Remove paint or heavy oxide where the anode sits, clean the mating surface, and tighten fixings evenly. If a kit includes bolts, use the correct length and do not overtighten into soft castings. After fitting, check that the anode is not loose and that it has direct metal-to-metal contact, otherwise it can look fitted but do very little.

How do I make sure an anode kit matches my drive or outboard?

Confirm the exact make, model, and year range, then check the kit’s contents list against your current anode locations. Look for key shapes such as plates, rings, trim tab anodes, and any small pencil anodes where used. Compare hole spacing and thickness if the old anodes are available, because small dimensional differences are common. If you can, cross-check part numbers from diagrams or the old anodes. Photos of the drive or outboard and the anode locations are often enough to confirm.

What if my kit includes fewer anodes than my drive has fitted?

Do not assume it is correct. Drives can be modified, and some setups include additional anodes not covered by a basic kit. Compare each location on your unit to the kit list, then fill gaps with individual anodes if needed. Also check whether your drive uses optional trim equipment or transom hardware that requires extra protection. If you send a photo of your anode positions, it is easier to identify which items are missing and what to add.

Can I fit a kit made from a different anode material than my current ones?

You can, but choose carefully based on water type and try to keep the material consistent across the protected system. Mixing materials can lead to uneven wear. If you are changing from one material to another, replace the set together rather than swapping one anode at a time. If your boat moves between waters, choose based on where it spends most of the season. If unsure, check what material was previously used successfully for your location and setup.
