Match the anode position before you match the brand

It is common to have multiple anodes on the same setup, for example plates, rings, and small anodes on hardware. Identify the exact location first, then match the shape and mounting details. This avoids ordering a correct brand anode that is meant for a different position on the same drive.

Hole spacing and profile prevent most fitting problems

Two anodes can look identical in a thumbnail image but differ in hole spacing, thickness, or recessed edges. Measure the old anode, or measure the mounting point, then compare to the listing. If you cannot measure, a photo next to a ruler can usually confirm the important details quickly.

Consistent material makes wear easier to monitor

If you are replacing several anodes on one system, replace like-for-like and keep the same material across that system. That helps you spot unusual wear that might point to bonding issues, stray current, or missing anodes elsewhere. After fitting, check for clean contact surfaces and re-check after a few outings.

What should I check to match the correct Recmar anode?

Confirm what it fits, such as a specific sterndrive, saildrive, outboard model, shaft diameter, hull fitting, or engine anode position. Then match the anode’s shape, thickness, and hole spacing, plus the fixing style. If you have a part number from the old anode, use it to validate, especially on ring and plate styles. Photos of the mounting point and the old anode help a lot when markings are unclear.

Can I swap from zinc to aluminium or magnesium on my next service?

You can, but it is best to choose material based on where the boat spends most of its time and switch the set across the same protected system together. Mixing materials on the same system can lead to uneven wear patterns. If you are unsure, match what has worked previously or share your boating environment and what the anodes fit. Fitment still comes first, because the correct material does not help if the anode does not mount properly.

Why do my anodes wear unevenly across the same system?

Uneven wear can be caused by missing anodes, poor contact at one mounting point, differences in immersion, or electrical issues such as bonding faults or stray current. Check each anode has clean metal contact and is tight, and confirm you have all expected anodes fitted. If one anode disappears rapidly, inspect shore power, chargers, and connections for corrosion or faults. Uneven wear is often a clue that something else needs attention.
