Replacing a Southerly Swing Keel Gauge

checklistElectrical

This guide explains how to approach a Southerly swing keel gauge replacement without guessing at the wrong part. The TMP Global team covers the role of the keel position sender, gauge panel and control switches, what details to identify from the existing installation, and why yacht model, panel orientation, sender length and fault symptoms all matter before ordering. Use it if your Southerly keel display has failed, reads incorrectly or needs a panel/sender replacement during a refit.

Key Summary

  • A Southerly swing keel gauge system is normally made up of a keel position sender and a helm display/control panel.
  • Do not order on yacht model alone; panel orientation, switch layout and sender length can vary.
  • The sender reads keel position; the gauge panel displays that position and may also include raise/lower switches.
  • Where possible, identify whether the fault is the sender, gauge, switches or wiring before replacing the full panel.
  • TMP Global can help match the replacement part to the existing Southerly setup before you commit to an order.

What the Southerly keel gauge system does

Southerly yachts with swing keels need clear position feedback. Without it, the helm has less confidence when raising, lowering or checking the keel position in shallow water, on a berth or under sail.

The system is simple in principle. A position sender reads the movement of the keel. The display panel turns that signal into a visible keel position. On many installations, the panel also includes illuminated controls for raising and lowering.

The parts to identify before ordering

Item to check Why it matters What to note
Yacht model Different Southerly models may use different panel layouts and sender lengths. Model, year and hull details if available.
Panel orientation Panels may be portrait or landscape depending on where they are fitted. Photo of the existing panel is best.
Switch position Landscape panels may place switches differently for port or starboard mounting. Left/right switch position and labels.
Sender The sender is the part that physically reads keel position. Length, wiring, mounting and any label markings.
Fault symptoms A blank panel, wrong reading and failed switch do not point to the same part. What changed, when, and whether the keel still operates.

Sender, gauge or wiring?

Replacing the full system may be unnecessary if only one part has failed. A gauge that lights but never moves may point towards the sender or wiring. A panel that is completely dead may point towards power, wiring, the gauge unit or switches. A keel that moves but does not indicate correctly needs a different approach from a keel control fault.

Before ordering, gather photos of the panel, sender, wiring and any labels. That gives us a much better chance of supplying the correct part first time.

Why the current replacement style is different from older panels

Older Southerly installations may have been through several design generations. Modern replacement parts tend to be more sealed, more serviceable and easier to support than early panels. That is useful, but it also means the replacement needs to be matched to the yacht rather than assumed from a single product photo.

If you are refurbishing the helm at the same time, it may be worth reviewing nearby instrumentation too. TMP Global also supplies marine position gauges, position senders, marine gauges and displays and related gauge spare parts.

Ordering checklist

  1. Take a clear front photo of the existing keel panel.
  2. Take a photo of the rear wiring if it is safe and accessible.
  3. Record yacht model, year and panel location.
  4. Check whether there is one control panel or more than one.
  5. Describe the fault: no display, wrong display, intermittent display, failed switch or sender damage.
  6. Send the details to TMP Global before ordering if there is any uncertainty.

FAQs

Can I fit a generic gauge instead?

We would not treat this as a generic fuel or water gauge job. Keel position indication is a specific position-sensing application and the panel/control arrangement needs to match the yacht.

Do I need to replace the sender and panel together?

Not always. If the failed part can be identified, replacing only the sender, gauge or switch panel may be the better route.

What is the most useful thing to send TMP Global?

Photos. A clear photo of the front panel, rear wiring, sender and any product labels usually saves more time than a written description alone.
