FAQs: Marine Anodes & Cathodic Protection

Which anode material do I need: zinc, aluminium, or magnesium?

Zinc is typically best for saltwater, aluminium works well in saltwater and brackish water, and magnesium is designed for freshwater. If you boat across mixed conditions, aluminium is often a strong all-round option.

When should I replace my anodes?

Replace anodes when they are roughly 50% worn. If they are heavily pitted, cracked, loose, or unevenly eroded, replace sooner.

Why are my anodes disappearing too quickly?

Fast wear can be caused by stray electrical current, poor bonding/earthing, marina shore power issues, or the wrong anode material for your water. If anodes vanish in weeks, it is worth checking electrical causes.

Can I mix zinc and aluminium anodes on the same boat?

It is best to keep the same anode material across the same system (for example, all anodes protecting the drive). Mixing materials can lead to uneven protection and confusing wear patterns.

Do anodes work if my boat has stainless steel parts?

Yes. Stainless and other underwater metals still need protection. Correct anode placement and good electrical continuity are important so the anode can protect the metals properly.

Should I paint anodes?

No. Painting anodes reduces or stops the electrical reaction they need to work. Keep them clean and uncoated.

How do I choose the correct Tecnoseal anode for my engine or drive?

Start with your engine or drive make and model, then match the anode shape and fixing points. If you have an OEM part number, search by that for the fastest match.

My anode looks fine, but it is not wearing at all. Is that a problem?

It can be. An anode that never wears may not be electrically connected to the metal it is meant to protect, or it may be the wrong type or fitted incorrectly.

How often should I check my anodes?

Check at least every few months during the season, and always during servicing, lift-outs, and before long trips.

I am not sure what I need. Can TMP Global help confirm fitment?

Yes. Send your engine or drive model, a photo of the existing anode, or the part number and we will help you match the correct Tecnoseal option.
